On May 28, 2008 in ceremonial conditions the multifunctional ice breaker "Saint-Petersburg" was launched at JSC "Baltiyskiy zavod". This is the second vessel of diesel-electric icebreakers, which Baltiyskiy zavod builds by the request of FSUE's (Federal state unitary enterprise) "Rosmorport". In the end of 2004 Baltiyskiy zavod won the international tender for construction of two multipurpose diesel-electric icebreakers.
The Head of Federal agency for sea and river transport A. A. Davydenko, the General Director of FSUE "Rosmorport" Yu. V. Parfyonov, the Heads of Baltiyskiy zavod and other representatives of this industry took part in solemn ceremony of launching the icebreaker "Saint-Petersburg". There was noted the importance of event not only for the port infrastructure, but also for performance of the transport program on which economic success of the country directly depend.
At the moment of the icebreaker "Saint-Petersburg" launching, its technical readiness was above 70 %. The most part of equipment and machinery have been mounted onboard at a building berth. The modern technology proven at the enterprise simultaneously execution of assembly and outfitting works, which essentially reduces the vessel construction time. After launching the experts of Baltiyskiy zavod will make outfitting works and final installation of all systems and machinery. In the autumn of 2008 the icebreaker will go to sea trials in the Baltic Sea, and till the end of current year the vessel will be transferred to the Customer. The ice breaker "Saint-Petersburg" is planned to operate in the water area of the Gulf of Finland. Its basic purpose will be to provide guiding super-ships of width up to 50 m and transportation of cargoes on the open part of the main deck.
"Saint-Petersburg" is a two-deck vessel with two full-driving rudder-propellers with total capacity of 16 МW. This technical feature will give necessary additional maneuverability for the vessel. The unified vessel automated control system and life-support control system are provided for "Saint-Petersburg".
The icebreaker is designed to provide guiding super-ships of width up to 50 m; to tug vessels in ice and open water; to transport cargoes; to perform rescue operations and assistance for vessels in distress; to extinguish fire. In addition the icebreaker will be provided with equipment for the following operations: searching sunk objects in the depth up to 25 meters; hydraulic engineering research; participation in operations for oil spillage localization.
The technical project of the diesel-electric ice breaker is developed by Baltiyskiy zavod with the participation of the experts from CCB "Baltsudoproekt". The vessel's hull shape is designed based on new technological development to decrease energy consumption for ice breaking and to improve the vessel performance characteristics. The icebreaker's hull is rated for passable ice thickness above 1.2 meters. Such characteristics are optimum for using the vessel in the water area of the Gulf of Finland. A landing place for a helicopter of Ка-32 type or Ка-226 type is provided in the vessel's aft part.
